Sheri Martin Chen – known to students and families as Ms. Martin Chen – joined Hillside Academy as Head of School in 2025. She brings more than 15 years of experience in education and school leadership, along with a rich background in teaching History, English, Chinese, and Social Studies. A passionate advocate for student-centered learning, she is especially enthusiastic about project-based approaches that empower students to become makers, editors, designers, and directors of their own learning.

Ms. Martin Chen holds a Master’s Degree in Chinese and American Studies from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. Her career has included roles as teacher, Director of Academics, and Assistant Head of School. She is deeply committed to preparing students for success in a dynamic, ever-evolving world.

Since arriving at Hillside, Ms. Martin Chen has been inspired by the warmth and strong sense of community on campus. “Coming to work is a joy,” she shares. As Head of School, she looks forward to a year filled with growth, collaboration, and shared learning among students, educators, and families.

Outside of school, Ms. Martin Chen enjoys reading, listening to podcasts, social dancing, and has recently taken up hand-sewing. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and has traveled extensively throughout China – experiences that have shaped her global perspective and enriched her educational practice. Originally from Kansas, she now lives locally with her boy-girl twins, who fill her days with laughter and discovery.

Ms. Martin Chen is excited to lead Hillside Academy into its next chapter and is deeply committed to fostering a school where every student is known, valued, and empowered to thrive.
