BIO
Mindy Smith, known to her students as Ms. Smith, has been an integral part of Hillside Academy since 2021, teaching all general education subjects to 2nd and 3rd graders. She holds an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts from West Valley College, a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (Elementary Education) with a certificate from Western Governors University (WGU), and a Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction from WGU.
With over 10 years of experience in education, Mindy has previously worked as a Substitute Teacher in the Riverview School District. Her certifications include CPR/AED First Aid, PLTW Launch Classroom Teacher Credential, and specialized training from Teachers College on Understanding and Implementing Phonics Units of Study K-2. She has also attended the OSPI Private School Conference, focusing on applying neural lenses to teaching and learning.
Mindy chose to pursue a career in education out of a deep passion for teaching, inspired by the kindness, empathy, and caring of her own former teachers. At Hillside Academy, she values the strong sense of community among staff, families, and students. Her teaching philosophy centers on the belief that all children are unique and deserve an environment where they can be their authentic selves, growing and learning to their fullest potential.
This year, Mindy aims to continue enhancing her teaching skills through professional development, ensuring that she provides the best possible education for her students.
Outside of the classroom, Mindy enjoys trail running and reading. She has a love for travel and has visited nearly all 50 states in the U.S. A fun fact about her that surprises many is her fondness for both coffee and sleep. Mindy lives by the simple joy of running and finds it a great way to balance her active lifestyle.
Mindy’s family includes her husband, J.W., a Seattle firefighter, and their two children, Richie (15) and Declan (13). They share their home with a dog named Charlie and a cat named Ruby.
