Campaign Culminates in Giving Expo
On Friday, April 29th, 2016, I had the privilege of attending our first Giving Expo. This wasn’t the first year that giving was a part of our school wide learning. In fact, we have incorporate service projects school wide, since our inception. What made this year different? This year, instead of just “doing” the projects, we asked our students to reflect on their experiences and present their thoughts about giving to a public audience.
My favorite part was leading up to the Expo. A few days before the Expo, I pulled students from every class and asked them to tell me what they, as individuals, did to make a difference in their community. And they did!! At first, there were a few students who thought I was asking them to report what they did as a list of facts, but soon they figured out that I was asking them to go deeper. I wanted to know what they thought, what they felt, what the experience meant to them. And to my great satisfaction and joy, they thought about what they had done and what it meant to them, and the explained it to me.
These are the moments I treasure. It’s moments like these that give teaching meaning and worth. To hear from students their thoughts, their deepening understanding of the world, their growth, in their own words, unscripted and unrehearsed. Statements, like that of an 8th grader who said, “It really made an impact. It gave me a positive mindset on how it pays off to help other people,” or the 6th grader who said, “It really changed my mindset on homeless people.” are evidence of the seeds that are taking root. It makes me proud to be a part of who these children will grow up and become. They will be world changers!

Matthew 5: 14-16
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven.”
